ADHA’s 2021 Awards Program is a way to honor and recognize our members dedication to the dental hygiene profession (in various aspects of the dental hygiene world: clinical, education, public health, research, etc.). Award for Excellence in Dental Hygiene

ADHA is pleased to announce the Award for Excellence in Dental Hygiene. This award honors dental hygienists who have evidence of active involvement in ADHA and its constituents, exhibit evidence of leadership in and the advancement of dental hygiene experience, provide evidence for the incorporation of any and/or all roles of the dental hygienist to document outstanding accomplishments that have a simple impact on the practice and future of the dental hygiene profession.

      • Hold at least 10 years membership in ADHA prior to application
      • Demonstrate evidence of active involvement in ADHA and its constituents
      • Exhibit evidence of leadership in and the advancement of dental hygiene experience
      • Provide evidence of the incorporation of any and/or all of the roles to document "outstanding accomplishments that have a significant impact on the practice and future of the dental hygiene profession”

Irene Newman Outstanding Clinician Award

The Irene Newman Outstanding Clinician Award honors a clinical dental hygienist who shows outstanding expertise in relating the interdependence of clinical practice and patient education for the improvement of patient compliance, while making a difference in the lives of their patients/clients.

      • Must be a registered dental hygienist and a member of ADHA
      • Must be employed as a dental hygienist in a clinical setting
      • Must demonstrate quality of care within his/her practice
      • Employees of ADHA, Board of Trustee members, family members of aforementioned, previous winners and employees of Hu-Friedy are not eligible to apply for this award

Educator of the Year

The Educator of the Year Award recognizes, honors, and rewards a full or part-time dental hygiene faculty member who contributes to and provides high-quality education to dental hygiene students.

  • Application Eligibility & Requirements:
      • Must be an active member of ADHA and have at least five (5) years of ADHA membership
      • Full-time or part-time (no less than 15 contact hours per week)
      • Faculty Status (Select One)
        • Full-time faculty member of an accredited dental hygiene program, degree-completion, or Master of Science in Dental Hygiene program
        • Part-time faculty member (no less than 15 contact hours per week) of an accredited dental hygiene program, degree-completion, or Master of Science in Dental Hygiene program
      • Employees of ADHA, Board of Trustee members, family members of aforementioned, previous winners and employees of sponsor (if applicable) are not eligible to apply for this award

        • Three (3) peer nominations are required from another faculty member, a current student, and an alumni student.
        • The (3) peer nomination should include the following:
          • Highlights of the nominee’s contribution to dental hygiene education
          • Description as to why the nominee should receive the award

        • The personal statement should describe the following:
          • Nominee's philosophy of teaching
          • Nominee's growth in teaching and learning
          • How nominee has contributed to student learning and achievement
          • How the award monies will be used to advance teaching in the nominee's program
      • Recent Student Evaluation Data
        • PDF or word document summary of the most recent student evaluation data. Be sure to include what course is being evaluated.
      • Abbreviated Curriculum Vitae (limited to 7 pages or less).
        • This should include the following:
          • Title, rank, and years of experience

          • Educational background (including any fellowships)
          • Teaching accomplishments, mentoring activities, honors, awards, and key publications


ADHA Esther Wilkins Future Leader Award

The ADHA Esther Wilkins Future Leader honors dental hygienists who exhibit a strong commitment to the dental hygiene profession and have demonstrated leadership in the American Dental Hygienists' Association within five years of graduation from an accredited dental hygiene program. For 2021, applications will be accepted from graduates in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 or 2020.

      • Have graduated from an accredited dental hygiene program within the last five years (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 or 2020)

Examples include Student officer positions, committees/activities, attending ADHA's House of Delegates and serving as an ADHA Student Delegate, etc.

        • List all leadership experience as an Active member of ADHA. This includes component (local hygiene society) officer and committee positions; constituent (state) officer and committee positions as well as any national experience including serving as a delegate, alternate delegate, council member, page, teller, etc.
      • Section III - Leadership Essay (1,000 words or less)
        • Describe your core values, unique top strengths, and how you see yourself contributing to the future of ADHA and the dental hygiene profession?

ADHA Community Outreach Award

The Community Outreach Award recognizes ADHA components and individuals submitting on behalf of components that have implemented significant community outreach programs, focusing on preventive health and oral health care.

      • ADHA constituent without a component organization
      • Community projects are those that document a community need and have specific measurable objectives.
        • Community projects must involve volunteer dental hygienists and may include other members of the oral health care team.
        • Examples of community projects are:
          • School Programs
          • Programs for Special Populations
          • Media Public Information Programs
      • Community projects must involve volunteer dental hygienists and may include other members of the oral health care team.
      • Examples of community projects are: school programs | programs for special populations | media public information programs
      • Any component or individual responsible for implementing a community project concerned with some aspect of preventive oral health may submit an entry.
      • The number of entries each component may submit is not limited. An entry may be submitted by an individual or group of individuals on behalf of a component; however, duplicate entries submitted by more than one component or individual will not be considered.
      • Any entry for a project newly implemented or on-going that has completed one year of implementation will be considered, if it is not a previous award-winning entry/project.
      • Do not include personal job descriptions, resumes and/or curricula vitae.
      • A description of no more than 2-3 pages typewritten and a 100-word summary must be submitted along with the necessary documentation. It is recommended that the “POARE” model be used.

ADHA Professional Membership Achievement Award

The ADHA Professional Membership Achievement Award is presented to an ADHA member selected for outstanding contributions to the Association made over a period not less than 20 years in areas of leadership, education, committee activity, continuing education, publication, and overall service to the field of dental hygiene.
