Looking for an opportunity that will provide financial assistance to further your academic achievement, professional excellence and a desire to improve the public’s overall health?

ADHA’s Institute for Oral Health Scholarship Program offers financial assistance to dental hygiene students and dental hygienists who demonstrate a commitment to advance the discipline of dental hygiene. The call for scholarship applications begin in October of each year. Apply for your opportunity to receive funding to extend your dental hygiene education.

Applicants can only choose one scholarship to be considered for and should refer below to the scholarship listing for full eligibility details.

Current ADHA Institute Board of Directors, ADHA Board of Trustees and members of the Scholarship Review Committee are not eligible to apply

Available Scholarships

  • Graduate Scholarships

      • Applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered, please refer to specific scholarships for further requirements:

        * Must be enrolled in a Graduate degree program (full or part-time) in Dental Hygiene or accredited, degree studies related to the professional roles of the dental hygienist.
        * A minimum grade point average (GPA)- please refer to the specific scholarship to which you are applying to find out the minimum require GPA
        * A student during the academic year for which you are applying. If you are graduating that same year, you are still eligible. Note that scholarship awards are distributed after July 1, so this may be a "reimbursement" check given to the student for their tuition/school expense already assumed during the school year.
        * Must be a professional or student member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA).
        * Graduate students must hold an active dental hygiene license and hold the minimum of a baccalaureate degree

        Irene Woodall Graduate Scholarship
        Education level pursuing: Graduate degree in dental hygiene or a related field
        Maximum number of annual awards: 1
        Award Amount: $1,000

        Dr. Esther Wilkins Scholarship - Established by Dr. Esther Wilkins.
        Education level pursuing: additional degree(s) neccessary for a career in dental hygiene education. Applicants must have completed an entry-level dental hygiene program. (Requires separate essay.)
        Maximum number of annual awards: 1
        Award Amount: $1,000

        Sigma Phi Alpha Graduate Scholarship - Awarded to an outstanding student pursuing a Graduate degree in dental hygiene or related field that is a potential future Sigma Phi Alpha member or a current member in good standing.
        Education level pursuing: Graduate degree
        Maximum number of annual awards: 1
        Award Amount: $1,000

        Alice Hinchcliffe Williams, RDH, MS Merit Scholarship - Funded by the Virginia Dental Hygienists’ Association Foundation to honor their deceased colleague and benefactor who enabled establishment of the VDHA Foundation. The scholarship supports a part-time or full-time student pursuing a baccalaureate or graduate degree in Dental Hygiene or in accredited studies related to the professional roles of the Dental Hygienist.
        While the applicant must possess an active Dental Hygiene license and be a resident of Virginia, attending school in the state of Virginia is not an eligibility requirement.
        Maximum number of annual awards: 1
        Award Amount: $1,500

        Wilma Motley Memorial California Merit Scholarship - Applicants must demonstrate leadership experience in addition to meeting the minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
        These scholarships will be awarded solely on merit and do not have a financial needs requirement.
        Regional Limitation: Applicants must be either a resident of California or attend a dental hygiene program in California.
        Education level pursuing: Associate in dental hygiene, Baccalaureate degree, degree completion in dental hygiene, Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice (RDHAP), Master's or Doctorate degree in dental hygiene or related field.
        Maximum number of annual awards: 3
        Award Amount: $2,000

    • Baccalaureate Scholarships

      • Applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered, please refer to specific scholarships for further requirements:

        * Must be enrolled in an accredited dental hygiene program in the United States
        * Completed a minimum of one year in a dental hygiene curriculum. Students entering their first year of dental hygiene school are not eligible; students may be in the process of completing their first year when application is submitted.
        * A minimum grade point average (GPA)- please refer to the specific scholarship to which you are applying to find out the minimum require GPA
        * A full-time student during the academic year for which you are applying (Fall 2018 – Spring 2019)
        * Must be a professional member or student member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA).

        Wilma E. Motley Scholarship - Established in memory of Wilma E. Motley.
        Education level pursuing: Baccalaureate degree
        Maximum number of annual awards: 1
        Award Amount: $1,000

        Dr. Esther Wilkins Scholarship - Established by Dr. Esther Wilkins.
        Education level pursuing: additional degree(s) necessary for a career in dental hygiene education. Applicants must have completed an entry-level dental hygiene program. (Requires separate essay.)

        Sigma Phi Alpha Undergraduate Scholarship - Awarded to an outstanding student pursuing a Baccalaureate degree at a school with an active chapter of the Sigma Phi Alpha Dental Hygiene Honor Society that is a potential future Sigma Phi Alpha member or a current member in good standing.
        Education level pursuing: Baccalaureate degree
        Maximum number of annual awards: 1
        Award Amount: $1,000

        Scholarship for Academic Excellence - Sponsored by Johnson & Johnson. Two scholarships are reserved for students pursuing a Baccalaureate degree and three scholarships are designated for students pursuing an Associate degree.
        Education level pursuing: (2) Baccalaureate degree (3) Associate degree
        Maximum number of annual awards: 5
        Award Amount: $1,000

        Crest Oral-B Laboratories Dental Hygiene Scholarships - Sponsored by Procter & Gamble, these scholarships are awarded to applicants at the baccalaureate degree level who demonstrate an intent to encourage professional excellence and scholarship, promote quality research, and support dental hygiene through public and private education
        Education level pursuing: Baccalaureate degree
        Maximum number of annual awards: 2
        Award Amount: $1,000

        Karla Girts Memorial Community Outreach Scholarship - Sponsored by Procter & Gamble in memory of Karla Girts, BSDH, RDH, past president of ADHA and former Chair of ADHA Institute for Oral Health. Applicants will display a commitment to improving oral health within the geriatric population in addition to a cumulative grade point average equal to or above 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. (Requires separate essay.)
        Education level pursuing: Associate, Baccalaureate or degree completion program
        Maximum number of annual awards: 2
        Award Amount: $2,000

        Hu-Friedy/Esther Wilkins Instrument Scholarships -Sponsored by Hu-Friedy Manufacturing Co., Inc. The program awards recipients with the Hu-Friedy dental hygiene instruments of their choice, equivalent to a retail value of $1,000
        Education level pursuing: Associate or Baccalaureate degree level. 3.0 GPA Required
        Maximum number of annual awards: 5

        Carol Bauhs Benson Scholarship - Established in memory of Carol Bauhs Benson.

        Regional limitation: open to students who reside in the following states: Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Wisconsin

        Award Amount: $1,000

        Sigma Phi Alpha Associate Scholarship - Awarded to an outstanding student pursuing a Associate degree at a school with an active chapter of the Sigma Phi Alpha Dental Hygiene Honor Society that is a potential future Sigma Phi Alpha member.

        Maximum number of annual awards: 1

        Colgate "Bright Smiles, Bright Futures" Minority Scholarships - Sponsored by Colgate Palmolive Company, these scholarships are awarded to members of minority groups currently underrepresented in dental hygiene programs at the Associate educational level. Example eligible applicants include: African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, and males.
        Education level pursuing: Associate degree
        Maximum number of annual awards: 2
        Award Amount: $1,250
