ADHA Submits Comments
in Support of South Carolina FTC Ruling
The American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) recently
submitted comments in support of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
consent order settling charges that the South Carolina State Board
of Dentistry “unlawfully restrained competition in violation
of section 5 of the FTC act by adopting a rule that required a dentist
to examine every child before a dental hygienist could provide preventive
care—such as cleanings—in schools.” The charges
against the State Board of Dentistry were originally brought in September
of 2003.

Journal of Dental Hygiene…
See What You’ve Been Missing
On a recently conducted ADHA survey, 88.9 percent of respondents
reported that having a peer-reviewed journal like the Journal of Dental
Hygiene (JDH) is important for the profession. On the same survey,
only 62.7 percent of respondents said that they had actually read
JDH during the past 12 months. If you are among the nearly 40 percent
who have not read JDH, here’s an opportunity to find out what
you have been missing. As a new feature, www.adha.org
will highlight articles from past editions of JDH and make them available
for viewing to any visitor. A rapidly evolving body of research and
a highly regarded scientific journal to report the findings are vital
components of a growing profession. Find out for yourself what you
have been missing by reading this highlighted article from JDH

Washington
Post Article Looks at Direct Access for Dental Hygienists
A well balanced article that appeared in the April 22,
2008 edition of the Washington Post is a wonderful illustration of
how the power of teamwork and a solid staff and volunteer partnership
can pay off for ADHA. ADHA President Jean Connor,
RDH, Government Affairs Division staff, Communications Division staff,
Washington Counsel Karen Selander, Board of Trustees member Pam Quinones,
RDH, BS, and Maryland Dental Hygienist’s Association leadership
worked with Post staff writer Mary Otto on an article to explore the
recent passage of a direct access bill in Maryland and serve as a
follow-up to last year’s story on the death of Deamonte Driver
which Otto also covered. The article provides wonderful
exposure in a national venue of ways that dental hygienists can be
creatively used to help overcome the access to care crisis in the
U.S. You can read the article online here. |
