As dental hygienists, we have daily opportunities to build trust with patients. Those simple conversations in the operatory often leave a lasting impression.

When I first heard about the Hygienist Inspired program, I was immediately drawn to its purpose. I became an ambassador because I wanted to use those moments to guide others toward a fulfilling and impactful career in dental hygiene. My goal was to help others see themselves in this profession and to share the pride I feel in being a part of it.

The program has not only helped me connect with others but also supported my professional growth. Through ambassador training and active outreach, I have gained stronger communication skills and greater confidence as a leader. I have learned how to speak clearly about the wide range of opportunities in dental hygiene and how to share my own journey in a way that resonates with students, patients and members of our communities.

Building Awareness, One Conversation at a Time
One memorable experience occurred at a local oral health fair event. I spoke with a high school student who was volunteering to earn community service hours for a course she was taking. She had never thought about pursuing a career in dental hygiene, but during our conversation, something clicked for her. I shared what I love most about this profession, the relationships, the flexibility, and the opportunity to make a difference in public health. Several weeks later, she contacted me to share the exciting news that she had enrolled in a dental assisting program and was planning to apply to a dental hygiene program. That one conversation changed her path and reminded me of the impact our voices can have.

Hygienist Inspired emphasizes reaching individuals from underrepresented populations to create a more inclusive and representative workforce.

Recruitment into the profession comes with challenges. Many people do not fully understand what a dental hygienist does beyond “cleaning teeth”. The Hygienist Inspired program helps to address these barriers by encouraging ambassadors to be visible in their communities and providing tools to guide thoughtful, welcoming conversations about career possibilities. Hygienist Inspired emphasizes reaching individuals from underrepresented populations to create a more inclusive and representative workforce in the field of dental hygiene.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Hygienists
To any dental hygienist thinking about becoming involved, I would say this: Your story matters. You do not have to be a seasoned speaker or educator. What matters most is your willingness to share why you chose this path and what keeps you motivated each day. The Hygienist Inspired program offers excellent support, including educational materials, conversation guides and a community of fellow ambassadors who are just as passionate about advancing dental hygiene. I have found that chairside recruitment works best when it feels natural and sincere. I listen to the interests of the person I am speaking with, whether a patient, student or family member. From there, I highlight what makes our profession unique and When we show our passion, others are inspired to learn more. personally meaningful. When we show our passion, others are inspired to learn more.

Mentorship and community engagement are central to the success of Hygienist Inspired. Attending school events, participating in career fairs, and mentoring students or assistants all contribute to building awareness. Many future hygienists need to see someone they can relate to before they can envision themselves in the role. That’s why it is so important to make ourselves accessible and present.

You can still support the mission even if you are not an ambassador. Consider taking the Hygienist Inspired Ally Pledge. Learn how to take the pledge here. Talk about your journey with those around you. Encourage students to explore the field. Create a space for honest conversations about the realities and rewards of the profession. Every connection we make, no matter how small, has the potential to lead someone toward a meaningful career in dental hygiene.
