As a Registered Dental Hygienist with over a decade of dental experience, I’ve had the opportunity to work in a variety of settings, from private practices to mobile dentistry. However, becoming an Ambassador for the Hygienist Inspired (HI) pilot program has been one of my most meaningful career experiences. What initially drew me to the program was my belief that we, as healthcare providers, have both the power and responsibility to expand our profession by sharing our knowledge, encouraging new talent, and helping build a more diverse and inclusive future for dental hygiene.
Representation matters. As a Black woman in a field where minorities are underrepresented, I’ve felt firsthand the impact of being “the only one in the room.” But instead of seeing that as a limitation, I’ve leaned into it as motivation. Through the HI program, I’ve been able to serve as a living example of what’s possible. I know that young people of color in my community need to see someone who looks like them achieving success in healthcare. It sends a powerful message: “You belong here too.”
One of the most impactful parts of being an ambassador is engaging in community outreach. During these events, I’ve had many meaningful conversations. One that stands out was with a friend in public health who was working from home. She was feeling unfulfilled and looking for a new path. After we talked about dental hygiene, she was inspired to begin pursuing dental hygiene school. The impact of planting a seed that can blossom into a passionate professional is exactly why this program is so important.
Participating in this program has also strengthened my professional development and leadership skills. I’ve become more confident in presenting to peers and speaking up in professional spaces. It’s one thing to do the work, but another to be able to articulate the ‘why’ behind it when advocating for the importance of oral health and access to care. Through the support and visibility offered by HI, I’ve grown more comfortable stepping into leadership roles and mentoring others who are just beginning their own journey.
The Hygienist Inspired program plays a critical role in fostering diversity and inclusion in the profession. It provides exposure to people who may not have otherwise considered dental hygiene as a career. Many people simply don’t know what a dental hygienist does, let alone the career opportunities it offers. By bringing the profession into schools, community events, and underrepresented neighborhoods, this program opens doors and minds.
Community engagement and mentorship are the heart of this program’s success. I’ve found that when I show up as my authentic self, people feel comfortable asking questions, sharing their fears, and opening up to the idea of a new career path. I’ve been able to connect with students, parents, and adults in transition; those moments of connection can lead to a lasting impact. It’s not just about handing out pamphlets—it’s about forming relationships and being a trusted resource.

Other dental hygienists can support the mission of HI, even if they aren’t ambassadors. It starts with talking. Whether it’s during a routine appointment or a casual conversation, we all can educate and inspire. If you meet someone who seems like they would thrive in this field, tell them. Share your story. Be honest about the challenges, but also about the rewards. The future of our profession depends on how we uplift one another and build pathways for the next generation. By making space for diversity, we make room for innovation, empathy, and culturally competent care. I’m proud to be part of a movement that is redefining who gets to be a dental hygienist.
The Hygienist Inspired program makes it easy to get involved. By becoming a Hygienist Inspired Ally, dental hygienists can share their passion through everyday chairside conversations, inspiring patients and colleagues to consider our rewarding profession. Take the Ally Pledge at adha.org/HygienistInspired and join the movement—whether you spark one conversation a day or one a week, your efforts matter!
