SHOR

Student House of Representatives

The Student House of Representatives (SHOR) allows students the opportunity to discuss and vote on selected issues that are under consideration by the ADHA House of Delegates (HOD).

SHOR, which meets during ADHA’s annual session, is composed of 12 district student delegates, 12 district student alternates, and student representatives from each dental hygiene program.

During SHOR the 12 district student delegates elect one representative to serve as voting student delegate. This individual represents and votes for all the students at the ADHA HOD.

Student representatives select a student speaker of the house to preside over SHOR, with the assistance of ADHA’s speaker of the house. Any student representative, with the exception of any district student delegate who elects to run for the ADHA voting student delegate position, is eligible for this position. Knowledge of parliamentary procedure is recommended.

All student members can elect to volunteer for three positions within SHOR: teller, page, and time keeper.

Tellers distribute, collect, count, and report the results for the elections of the student speaker of the house and the ADHA voting student delegate. Five volunteers normally are needed during the session. One person serves as head teller and represents the reports of the tellers.

Pages deliver written motions to the student speaker of the house and relay messages from one part of the house to the other. Six volunteers are needed for this position; three serve during the morning session and three during the afternoon session.

Time keepers let the student speaker of the house know when an individual’s designated speaking time is up. Two volunteers serve in this position—one for each session of SHOR.
