Advanced Education
Many positions in public health settings require graduate education in
public health, or in one of its major disciplines. The Council on Education
for Public Health (CEPH) is the group recognized by the U.S. Department
of Education to accredit schools of public health and certain public health
programs offered in settings other than schools of public health. The
primary professional credential is the Master of Public Health (MPH),
but other masters and doctoral degrees (e.g., MS, MSPH, DrPH, PhD) are
offered as well. The CEPH home page
lists both types of accredited institutions and provides links to the
institutions’ websites, where educational programs are described
in detail.
Other Sources of Education
in Public Health
Some dental hygiene programs that offer bachelor degree completion options
or the Master of Science in Dental Hygiene allow students to select coursework
in public health as a concentration.
The Northeast
Wisconsin Technical College offers an online certificate program designed
to review basic principles underlying oral health programs in public health
settings for dental hygienists, dentists, and unlicensed staff currently
working in such programs.
Many schools of public health offer continuing
education coursework, particularly during the summer term. See websites
of accredited schools for additional information.
