| ADHA Announces Recipient of
2004 Distinguished Service Award-Laverne Whitmore
Chicago-August 10, 2004 – The
American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) has named Laverne
Whitmore, LDH, BS, of Indianapolis, Indiana, as a recipient of the
2004 ADHA Distinguished Service Award.
The award recognizes outstanding achievement
and dedication to the profession of dental hygiene.
Whitmore received her associate degree in
dental hygiene from the Indiana University School of Dentistry in
1975. She completed work on her bachelor’s degree in 2000.
She has served as president of her state and local dental hygiene
associations, as well as chair of ADHA’s Council on Association
Policy and Bylaws.
Whitmore has dedicated much of her time to
mentoring as well as to the promotion of dental hygiene education.
She was appointed in 2001 by Indiana’s governor, to serve
on the Indiana Board of Dentistry as its sole dental hygiene member.
Her responsibilities include reviewing licensure applications as
well as serving as an examiner.
Whitmore was honored during the opening ceremonies
at ADHA’s 81st annual session in Dallas on June 23.
ADHA is the largest national organization
representing the professional interests of more than 120,000 dental
hygienists across the country. Dental hygienists are preventive
oral health professionals, licensed in dental hygiene, who provide
educational, clinical and therapeutic services that support total
