Recipient of 2008 Alfred C. Fones Award – JoAnn
Gurenlian, RDH, Ph.D
Chicago—July 2, 2008—The
American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) has named JoAnn
Gurenlian, RDH, Ph.D, as the recipient of the 2008 Alfred C. Fones
Award. She was honored during Saturday’s plenary session at
ADHA’s 85th Annual Session in Albuquerque, N.M., on June 21st.
The award recognizes a current
ADHA member who has contributed significantly to the profession
of dental hygiene. The nominees had 25 years of cumulative ADHA
membership, dental hygiene association leadership experience, other
dental hygiene awards, participation both in the community and with
other allied health professions, authorship, and political involvement.
Gurenlian received her associate
of applied science and Bachelor of Science degrees from Fairleigh
Dickinson University in 1976 and 1978, respectively. She earned
her Master of Science in Dental Hygiene from Columbia University
in 1979, and her doctorate in 1991 from the University of Pennsylvania.
Gurenlian served as president
of ADHA from 1990-1991, and has been the vice president of the International
Federation of Dental Hygienists since 2007; her term will continue
through 2010. Currently Gurenlian is the president of Gurenlian
and Associates and works in conjunction the South Jersey Physician
Associates.
ADHA is the largest national
organization representing the professional interests of more than
150,000 dental hygienists across the country. Dental hygienists
are preventive oral health professionals, licensed in dental hygiene,
who provide educational, clinical and therapeutic services that
support total health through the promotion of optimal oral health.
