ABSTRACT
PURPOSE
Mood disorders (MDs) are prevalent in the United States. Patients with these
disorders are at increased risk of dental disease, and are very likely to be
treated by dental hygienist (DHs). This study proposes to determine knowledge
levels and attitudes towards MD ofDHs in District III, and the practice behaviors
DHs with adequate knowledge and positive attitudes employ when treating patients
with MD. The information gained from this study will be used to develop recommendations
for curricular changes in entry-level dental hygiene education and develop.
continuing education courses for practitioners.
RESEARCH DESIGN
This proposed survey research is a cross-sectional investigation with bivariate
and multivariate analytical components.
Statistical Analysis
Descriptive statistics will include univariate analysis with frequency distributions,
means, standard deviations, and ranges, and bivariate analysis of independent
variables versus dependent variables. Chi-square or rank sum tests, and
t-tests or ANDOVA will be used for nominal or ordinal independent variables.
Categorical dependent variables will be analyzed by chi-square and rank sum
tests.
Statistically significant bivariate associations will be grouped and added to the respective multiple logistic regression models. Final models will be constructed using stepwise multiple logistic regression, with a 0.05 cut-off criteria for entry into the models. Next, interactions among the fmal set of statistically significant independent variables will be assessed via the G statistic. Statistical significance will be set at ~.O5.
