Information and Application for Lobby Day 2009 Online beginning Thursday, January 15th

As the countdown to the Center for Lifelong Learning at ADHA’s 86th Annual Session in Washington DC begins, important information about the Lobby Day that will be staged in conjunction with the meeting will be made available on www.adha.org/annualsession.
 
Lobby Day 2009 will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 beginning at 7 a.m. and spanning the course of the day.  The event will be a great opportunity for dental hygienists to promote their profession on Capitol Hill and weigh in on important health care policy issues.  Given the increasing national dialogue on health reform and the host of targeted health policy initiatives planned for 2009, we feel that ADHA’s Lobby Day will be an impactful event to kick off CLL at ADHA’s 86th Annual Session!

Lobby Day 2009 will be structured and carried out similarly to past ADHA Lobby Days.  As in past Lobby Days, each state will be allotted five slots for members to participate in Lobby Day 2009.  Applications to attend Lobby Day 2009 will be available online at www.adha.org/annualsession beginning on Thursday, January 15.  Applications will be accepted through March 13, 2009.  All interested in attending Lobby Day should submit an application. 

State association presidents will be forwarded Lobby Day 2009 applications and will make the determination of the five members from their state who will attend Lobby Day 2009.  Every effort will be made to accommodate all who are interested in participating, but a cap on participants is necessary as a result of space and logistical limitations.  Additional details about the application and registration process will be available online. 

In the event that not all states use their five allotted member slots for Lobby Day 2009, the additional slots will be allocated to ADHA members on a first-come-first-serve basis.  A wait list of all applicants interested in participating will be generated.  All applications will be time and date stamped, so submitting an application early is advised.

Participants in Lobby Day 2009 will be required to pay a registration fee – $75 for ADHA members and $35 for student members.  While ADHA has not traditionally charged a fee for Lobby Day participation, a registration fee is common practice for Lobby Day events staged by other organizations.  ADHA will cover the bulk of Lobby Day expenses, but the registration fee will help offset some of the costs associated with staging, transportation, and materials.

ADHA will coordinate all scheduling of appointments for those participating in Lobby Day 2009.  Participants will receive their schedule of legislative visits at the start of the event.

Lobby Day will be held on June 17 beginning at 7 a.m. and continuing throughout the course of the day.  Those interested in participating should plan travel into D.C. accordingly.  Given the early start, out of town participants will likely need to arrive in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, June 16.

North American Dental Hygiene Research Conference and Call for Abstracts
You are invited to attend the North American Dental Hygiene Research Conference being held June 15th – 17th, 2009 in Bethesda, Md. The conference brings together members of the dental hygiene community to increase knowledge and skills for examining present models of health care delivery; increase and diversify the number of people involved in oral health research; build a network of dental hygiene researchers; explore strategies to improve data acquisition and analysis and submit grant proposals to address national research priorities. Call for Abstracts
Abstracts are currently being accepted for presenting your research at the North American Dental Hygiene Research Conference Poster Session. Abstract guidelines and submission forms are available online at www.adha.org/research under research news. Submission deadline for the abstracts is February 1, 2009.

NCOHF Awards Three Dental Hygienists Toothfairy Grants
The National Children’s Oral Health Foundation (NCOHF) has awarded three Dental Hygienists’ Toothfairy Grants totaling $14,000 to help eliminate children’s suffering from preventable dental disease. These grants were made possible through contributions to the Dental Hygienists’ Toothfairy Campaign in partnership with the American Dental Hygienists’ Association. Recipients are members of NCOHF’s national affiliate network, dedicated to delivering comprehensive oral health treatment and preventive educational services to millions of economically disadvantaged children and their families.  

1. $10,000 to Catholic Healthcare West (Chandler, Arizona), that in collaboration with multiple community partners, has expanded its new dental clinic to reduce the incidence of needless suffering through its prevention and intervention dental program
2. $2,000 to Primary Health Care, Inc. Dental Clinic (Des Moines, Iowa) for vital prevention education program materials that teach positive behaviors to prevent pediatric dental disease
3. $2,000 to A Fluoride Connection Non-Profit Corporation (Madison, Wisconsin) for materials teaching prevention and positive behaviors that prevent needless pain caused by pediatric dental disease

APHA Invites Submission of Abstracts
The APHA Oral Health section invites the submission of abstracts for the 2009 Annual Meeting to be held November 7-11 in Philadelphia, Pa. The theme of the meeting is “Water and Public Health: The 21st Century Challenges."

The APHA Annual Meeting & Exposition is the oldest and largest gathering of public health professionals in the world, attracting more than 13,000 national and international physicians, dentists, dental hygienists, administrators, nurses, educators, researchers, epidemiologists, and related health specialists. The APHA meeting program addresses current and emerging health science, policy, and practice issues in an effort to prevent disease and promote health.

We encourage abstracts in all areas of public oral health and are also interested in abstracts that focus on the Annual Meeting theme.  Some suggested areas of interest include:

The deadline for abstract submission to the Oral Health Section is February 8, 2009.

Authors must provide complete and accurate contact information to be notified of abstract status. Abstracts will be selected through a rated review process according to significance, timeliness, and overall quality. Presenters of accepted abstracts must become individual members of APHA and register for the Annual Meeting.
