ADHA Board of Trustees Adopts Standards for Clinical Dental Hygiene Practice

The Board of Trustees of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA), at its winter meeting, adopted the Standards for Clinical Dental Hygiene Practice. ADHA appointed a task force to develop these standards. This group has been actively working on this document since the fall of 2005, held feedback sessions during forums at two ADHA annual sessions, and distributed the draft document widely to the communities of interest for review and comment.

These Standards, as developed, reflect the dental hygiene process of care and will be instrumental in assisting clinicians in their daily delivery of patient care. Further, these guidelines will be useful in educating the public, other care providers and policy makers on clinical dental hygiene practice.

“The approval of these Standards of Clinical Dental Hygiene Practice represents the culmination of more than two years of work by ADHA,” said ADHA President Jean Connor, RDH. “I’d like to thank the members of the Clinical Practice Guidelines Task Force who worked so hard to make this a reality. This milestone is just the latest example of the way that ADHA is truly advancing the profession of dental hygiene.”

Members of the ADHP Task Force included:

Pamela Zarkowski, BSDH, MPH, JD, Chair
Kathy Eklund, RDH, MHP
Tammy Filipiak, RDH, BS
Deborah M. Lyle, RDH, MS
Nancy Zinser, RDH, MS
Lynn Ramer, LPH – Board of Trustees Liaison

Look for the finalized version of the Standards for Clinical Dental Hygiene Practice document to be posted at www.ADHA.org in the next few weeks. In addition, the Standards will be distributed to all ADHA members, along with the May/June issue of Access thanks to the generous support of Philips Sonicare, Inc.

ADHA Board of Trustees Adopts ADHP Competencies

The Board of Trustees of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA), at its winter meeting, adopted the Competencies for the Advanced Dental Hygiene Practitioner (ADHP). The ADHP model has been created by ADHA as an answer to the oral health crisis in America.

ADHA’s vision is that this new mid-level provider would safely provide quality diagnostic, preventive, therapeutic and restorative services directly to the un-served public. In 2004 the ADHA House of Delegates, representing more than 120,000 dental hygienists across the country, recognized the need for ADHA to increase its efforts to address the public’s unmet oral health needs and thereby approved the development of an advanced dental hygiene practitioner. This is a significant advancement for the dental hygiene profession and demonstrates ADHA’s strong commitment to the public’s oral health.

“The approval of these ADHP competencies represents the culmination of nearly four years of work by ADHA,” said ADHA President Jean Connor, RDH. “I’d like to thank the members of the ADHP Task Force who worked so hard to make this a reality. This milestone is just the latest example of the way that ADHA is truly advancing the profession of dental hygiene and working hard to provide solutions to this nation’s oral health crisis.”

Members of the ADHP Task Force included:

Deborah Lyle, RDH, MS, Chair
Kristin Calley, RDH, MS
Michele Darby, BSDH, MS
Lynnette M. Engeswick, RDH, MS
Marie V. Gillis, RDH, MS
Sharon Golightly, RDH, EdD
Wendy Kerschbaum, RDH, MS
Christine Nathe, RDH, MS
Jacquelyn L. Fried, RDH, MS
Hope Oliver, RDH, MEd

Look for the finalized version of the ADHP Competencies document to be posted at www.adha.org in the next few weeks.

Research that Develops YOU!

The following are recent articles to help you stay on top of changes in oral health care and provide you with cutting-edge developments that you can use to make critical, evidence-based decisions that improve the health of the patients you serve.

Oral Manifestations of Sjögren’s Syndrome
S.A. Mathews, B.T. Kurien, and R.H. Scofield
J
Dent Res 2008;87 308-318 http://jdr.iadrjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/87/4/308
Despite having excellent oral hygiene, individuals with Sjögren’s syndrome have elevated levels of dental caries, along with the loss of many teeth, early in the disease. Sjögren’s syndrome alters the protein profile and brings about a change in the composition of saliva.

Osteoporosis and Oral Infection: Independent Risk Factors for Oral Bone Loss
R.M. Brennan-Calanan, R.J. Genco, G.E. Wilding, K.M. Hovey, M. Trevisan, and J. Wactawski-Wende
J Dent Res 2008;87 323-327 http://jdr.iadrjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/87/4/323
Studies have suggested that oral bone loss is independently influenced by local and systemic factors, including osteoporosis. This cross-sectional study of 1256 post-menopausal women, recruited from the Buffalo center of the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study, evaluated the influence of oral infection and age on the associations between osteoporosis and oral bone loss.

Optimal Drinking Water Composition for Caries Control in Populations
M. Bruvo, K. Ekstrand, E. Arvin, H. Spliid, D. Moe, S. Kirkeby, and A. Bardow
J Dent Res 2008;87 340-343 http://jdr.iadrjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/87/4/340 Apart from the well-documented effect of fluoride in drinking water on dental caries, little is known about other chemical effects. Since other ions in drinking water may also theoretically influence caries, as well as binding of fluoride in the oral environment, we hypothesized that the effect of drinking water on caries may not be limited to fluoride only.

The Endangered Clinical Teacher Scholar: Will this Eliminate Discovery from the Dental School Environment?
M. Oakley and A.R. Vieira J Dent Res 2008 87: 200-202. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

C. Trairatvorakul, S. Kladkaew, and S. Songsiripradabboon
J Dent Res 2008 87: 228-232. [Abstract] [Full Text] [Figures Only] [PDF]

As part of the evidence-based approach to care, these clinical recommendations should be integrated with the practitioner’s professional judgment and the patient’s needs and preferences. The evidence indicates that sealants can be used effectively to prevent the initiation and progression of dental caries.

The Effect of Dental Sealants on Bacteria Levels in Caries Lesions: A Review of the Evidence
Ella M. Oong, Susan O. Griffin, William G. Kohn, Barbara F. Gooch, and Page W. Caufield J Am Dent Assoc 2008; 139: 271-278. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF] Practitioners should not be reluctant to provide sealants—an intervention proven to be highly effective in preventing caries—because of concerns about inadvertently sealing over caries.

Exploring Four-Handed Delivery and Retention of Resin-Based Sealants
Susan O. Griffin, Kari Jones, Shellie Kolavic Gray, Dolores M. Malvitz, and Barbara F. Gooch J Am Dent Assoc 2008; 139: 281-289. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
