Hygienist Infection Control Survey

ADHA requests your participation in the following research survey being conducted by Nancy Goodwin, CDA, RDH, BS. This study is in keeping with the National Dental Hygiene Research Agenda and will help unleash your potential to provide the best care you can to your patients. Should you have any questions or comments, please contact Nancy directly at 706-583-2812 or via email at ngoodwi@my.wgu.edu.

Attention Hygienists:

As a part of graduate research, I am conducting a nationwide survey of dental professionals. The goal of the research is to discover the actual infection control practices of dental professionals across the country. The survey link below is being sent to thousands of dental hygienists and dental assistants. It will only take a few minutes of your time; results will be completely anonymous and will be used to develop a research project and subsequent articles that may be submitted to professional journals.

There are two ways to participate. First, click on the dental hygienists’ link and complete the survey. Second, please forward the links to dental assistants that you know both certified and not certified. This will help the results better reflect the population of assistants who are practicing in the United States. The Surveys will be open thru December 25, 2007.

Access Needs Your Assistance!

Access’ “Working” column interviews individuals who work as dental hygienists or who use their hygiene knowledge outside general private practice. Of particular interest are corporate careers, positions in research or consulting and clinical practice not in a private dental practice. If you are interested in being interviewed for this column, send an email briefly describing your work setting to Jean Majeski, managing editor of Access, at jeanm@adha.net, and title your email message Working Column [your last name]. The Access team will be in touch with you if you are selected as a candidate for the column.

Access’ “Profile” column is a question & answer about your professional life, your goals and influences, and your attitudes about the changing world of dental hygiene. Any ADHA member not currently serving on the board of trustees is welcome to participate. Email Jean Majeski, managing editor of Access, at jeanm@adha.net, and title your email message Profile Column [your last name]. If you are selected, you will receive a list of questions to answer and we will ask for a print-quality headshot to accompany the column. Answers will be edited for space.

Access is asking dental hygienists to share their stories illustrating why it is important to have disability insurance. If you would be willing to explain why you're glad you had disability insurance--or why you're sorry you didn't—send an email to Christineh@adha.net and title the message Disability Insurance Stories. Your submission may appear in print, or someone from the Access team may contact you for additional information.

Access wants to know who your mentor is and what they did to make a difference in your professional life. Recognize that special person without whom you would not be the dental hygienist you are today! Email your mentoring story to Christineh@adha.net and title the email Mentoring Stories. Your submission may appear in print, or someone from the Access team may contact you for additional information.

Have an interesting hobby? Volunteer with a great organization? Access wants to know what dental hygienists are doing out of the office to balance their lives, keep themselves healthy, stay financially secure and enhance their lifestyles. Please email your insights and contact information to Christineh@adha.net and title the email

Accessing Life. If we decide to use your idea in an article, someone from the Access team will get in touch with you. We look forward to your contributions! Please note: if you are featured in “Accessing Life,” we will need a print-quality photo that shows you participating in your featured activity.

If you are a male dental hygienist, or if you work with one, Access might like to interview you. Back in 2004, when we interviewed men who are ADHA members, we found that one of the reasons dental hygienists are predominantly female is that the profession has always been viewed as female—that perception has created our reality. Is this changing in the eyes of dental hygiene school faculty and administration, dentist-employers and oral health care consumers? If you have insights on this topic, contact Access Editor-in-Chief Christine A. Hovliaras-Delozier, RDH, BS, MBA at ChristineH@adha.net, and we may request an interview.

Your insights on Access are needed! We have made many changes in Access over the past two years. Tell us what you think of Access and if it has impacted your learning in dental hygiene and dentistry. Please email Christine A. Hovliaras-Delozier, RDH, BS, MBA at Christineh@adha.net.
