September 5, 2007 SCHIP Reauthorization Passes House and Senate; Thank you for your Support with Advocacy! ADHA would like to extend a thanks to all those who recently took the time to send letters to legislators in support of SCHIP reauthorization. Over the past few weeks, ADHA, along with ADA and a number of other oral health organizations, have been reaching out to members to ask them to contact legislators and encourage funding for the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). SCHIP provides uninsured children from low-income families with health insurance coverage. Prior to recessing for the month of August, both the House and Senate passed SCHIP reauthorization bills. The two chambers passed reauthorization bills that differ significantly and, as a result, leadership from the House and Senate will convene in September to negotiate a compromise bill. The House version of the reauthorization funds the program at $50 billion and includes language the ADHA supported to guarantee oral health care coverage under SCHIP. The House bill also includes a provision directing the Government Accounting Office to study the feasibility of using a mid-level oral health provider to work in collaboration with dentists. The Senate version of the reauthorization funds SCHIP at $35 billion and does not include the federal guarantee for dental services under SCHIP or the mid-level language, but does include $200 million in grants for states to address access to oral health care for underserved children. Again, ADHA appreciates the efforts of the many who took the time to send letters and make calls to your legislators. Your efforts certainly made a difference! IFDH Holds International Symposium The International Federation of Dental Hygienists (IFDH) met in Toronto, Canada to conduct the business of the Federation, and to hold an International Symposium on Dental Hygiene with the host organization, the Canadian Dental Hygienists’ Association. The purpose of the Federation is to: Safeguard and defend the interests of the profession of dental hygiene, represent and advance the profession of dental hygiene, promote professional alliances with its association members as well as with other associations, federations, and organizations whose objectives are similar, promote and coordinate the exchange of knowledge and information about the profession, its education, and its practice, promote access to quality preventive oral health care services, increase public awareness that oral disease can be prevented through proven regimen, provide a forum for the understanding and discussion of issues pertaining to dental hygiene. The House of Delegate’s reviewed the Strategic Plan and developed action plans, and held panels to evaluate “Positioning Dental Hygiene in Health Care” and “a Vision for the Future”. Survey of Dental Hygienists in the United States The American Dental Hygienists’ Association has launched a new multi-year initiative to become the preferred source for data and information on all aspects of the Dental Hygiene profession in the United States. In order to have a clearer understanding of the changes taking place within the profession of dental hygiene, we are conducting a survey of active dental hygienists through the Center for Health Workforce Studies at the University at Albany in New York. We are requesting the help of all dental hygienists, especially you and your colleagues, who are responsible for promoting the oral health of America. Hygienists across the country will be randomly selected at to participate in this research. The purpose of this workforce study is to document the roles and functions of dental hygiene professionals. Your participation in this survey is vital to the success of this important ADHA initiative. If you have received a survey, we encourage you to complete and return it to ensure that study results accurately describe dental hygienists in the United States. We are hopeful for and anticipate a high response rate to this survey. The data will be used to frame and support issues and strategies that will address concerns you and our colleagues have identified.
