Part 6:
Finding a Good Fit

While it is very important that you be happy in your work, the interview process is far from a perfect predictor of potential job satisfaction. Both parties are on “best behavior,” and situations are sometimes misrepresented. There are, however, clues, above and beyond the specifics of the job description, that you should make note of when deciding.

Atmosphere
Think about how the office makes you feel. Start with the reception area. Is it comfortable? Is the furniture stark and utilitarian or has an effort been make to make patients “feel at home”? Is the radio tuned to a station you can tolerate? What about the atmosphere the staff creates? Is an effort made to make you feel at ease? Does the staff appear rushed and harried? Is there a feeling of camaraderie? Listen to the receptionist when the phone is answered. Is there respect shown for the patients, a friendly tone of voice?

Is the equipment modern, clean, and well maintained? Is there an area for employees to relax? Are there windows, and is there adequate lighting? Do infection control procedures seem up to par? Ask yourself, “Could I be happy here 30 to 40 hours per week?”

Hiring Procedure
Consider the procedure for interviewing. If an office manager conducts the initial interview, it is generally a screening mechanism, and says a great deal about how the office is run. You must decide if you are comfortable with this. If you don’t perceive this as negative, then it probably isn’t, but some dental hygienists would be uncomfortable with that type of staff management.

Consider how much time you are given for the interview itself. Does the dentist take time to ask thoughtful questions, and make sure that your questions are answered satisfactorily? Are you given an opportunity to meet the staff and see the office? Do you have an opportunity to observe any interactions among dentist, staff, and patients?
