Outcomes
Upon
completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Define
the current and projected demographics of the older adult population.
- Identify
prescription drugs most frequently taken by the older adult and the
associated oral implications.
- Discriminate
between fact and fiction regarding the physiologic changes associated
with aging.
- Describe
common medical conditions experienced by the older adult, the appropriate
medical management of these conditions, and the oral health considerations
associated with each condition.
- Describe
the relationship between nutrition and aging.
- Discuss
common oral conditions observed in the older adult and their management.
- Discuss
the impact of social issues and legislation on the oral health of the
homebound and institutionalized older adult.
- Discuss
the barriers that interfere with the oral health-seeking behaviors of
the older adult.
- Incorporate
positive staff attitudes and improved access and comfort for the older
patient.
- Implement
office policies that will accommodate the older adult patient.
