Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Define the current and projected demographics of the older adult population.
  • Identify prescription drugs most frequently taken by the older adult and the associated oral implications.
  • Discriminate between fact and fiction regarding the physiologic changes associated with aging.
  • Describe common medical conditions experienced by the older adult, the appropriate medical management of these conditions, and the oral health considerations associated with each condition.
  • Describe the relationship between nutrition and aging.
  • Discuss common oral conditions observed in the older adult and their management.
  • Discuss the impact of social issues and legislation on the oral health of the homebound and institutionalized older adult.
  • Discuss the barriers that interfere with the oral health-seeking behaviors of the older adult.
  • Incorporate positive staff attitudes and improved access and comfort for the older patient.
  • Implement office policies that will accommodate the older adult patient.
