Introduction
Based
on current demographics, it is certain that dental hygienists will see
an increased number of geriatric patients in their workplaces. Descriptive
statistics about the older adult population can provide useful insight
regarding their health knowledge, attitudes and behaviors, and the barriers
that prevent them from seeking oral health care. Assessment and management
of the oral conditions experienced by the older adult are complex, and
the dental hygienist must be familiar with the physiologic, pathologic,
pharmacologic, and psychosocial aspects of aging.
