Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • List and describe the general types of mental illness.
  • Explain how a person’s mental health can affect oral health and treatment.
  • Recognize oral conditions that may indicate mental health problems.
  • Recognize medications often used to treat mental illness and the potential side-effects that can impact oral health.
  • Explain how to take a mental health history.
  • Describe the process of making a mental health referral.
  • Recognize fear and suspicion in patients and respond appropriately.
  • Describe ways to communicate with people who have chronic mental illness (CMI).
  • Describe ways to work with CMI patients' case managers.
