NO. 6 Managing Oral Ulcerations (Non-Viral) and Pain - 5 OTC topical anesthetic agents containing benzocaine in protective preparations may be used by clients with localized ulcerations. Benzocaine is an ester anesthetic; therefore, caution must be used when recommending these OTC products to clients with reported allergies to anesthetics. When oral pain is generalized, clients may use an OTC agent such as Chloraseptic® aa spray or Xylocaine® 2%, a viscous lidocaine prescription mouth rinse. Benadryl® x elixir and Benylin® x cough syrup may also provide topical anesthetic relief Because sprays and mouth rinses may anesthetize the palate and throat, clients should be advised to use caution when swallowing food to avoid aspiration, and to chew carefully to avoid trauma to the oral mucous membranes. |
